Oct 9-Wednesday

Today, you will read the article "What are Outbreaks, Epidemics, and Pandemics?" and answer questions 3 thru 6 in complete sentences in your notebook. Glue the article to the right side page of your notebook. On the left side page, you will create a foldable on Outbreaks, Epidemics, and Pandemics. Please color and glue the pieces together. When you have completed the foldable- glue it in your notebook. Look at the example below.

  • Epidemic is specific to one city, region or country, while a pandemic goes much further than national borders.

  • Pandemic is an outbreak of global proportions. It happens when a novel virus emerges among humans - it causes serious illness and is easily human transmissible (spreads easily from person-to-person)

Students will simulate the spread of a virus through a population of people. Students will make several exchanges of "saliva" (fake- it's only water) and among the group will be two "infected saliva". After completion of the lab, students will try to figure out just which two samples where originally infected.

Sept 26-Thursday 1/2 Day for Students

"Diseases Caused by Microbes" foldable

Make a foldable to show the categories of microbes and the problems they cause. Choose two diseases caused by the microbe. Write the 'definition', list the symptoms, and the effects of that disease. Be prepared to share!
1. Fold the paper in half (NOT on the solid line).
2. Cut along the 3 dotted lines up to the solid line.
3. Above the cut section, label the microbes: Bacteria, Protists, Viruses, and Fungi. Create a title at the very top of the foldable.
4. Under each flap, write the information.
5. On the top of the flap, draw a picture of the structure of the microbe.
6. Use INK pen and make it colorful!!
7. When finished, glue along the fold.

Sept 25-Wednesday

Today students characterized 4 types of pathogens (fungi, bacteria, viruses and parasites) by doing a gallery walk. They read different texts about these 4 pathogens and completed a chart to organize our information. This information will assist in the creation of a Microbe Foldable.

Posters located around the room.

Student Chart- to be filled in (cut in half- one chart per student)
